What Is the Ontario Trillium Benefit?

The OTB is a tax-free monthly payment that combines three provincial credits:

  • Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC): Assists with energy costs and property taxes.
  • Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC): Helps offset higher home energy costs for residents in Northern Ontario.
  • Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC): Provides relief from the sales tax you pay on everyday purchases.

These credits are administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) on behalf of the Ontario provincial government.

How Much Can You Receive?

The amount you receive from the OTB depends on your eligibility for each of the three credits:

Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC)

  • Up to $1,283 for individuals aged 18–64.
  • Up to $1,461 for seniors aged 65 and older.
  • Up to $285 if you live on a reserve or in a public long-term care home.
  • An additional $25 for time spent in a designated college, university, or private school residence.

Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC)

  • Up to $185 for single individuals.
  • Up to $285 for families and single parents.

Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC)

  • Up to $371 for each eligible person in your household, including children.

The total amount you receive will be the sum of the credits you’re eligible for. For example, a family of four could receive up to $1,484 per year from the OTB.

To qualify for the OTB, you must meet the eligibility criteria for at least one of the three credits. Eligibility is determined based on your 2024 income tax and benefit return.

When Will I Receive My Payment?

OTB payments are issued monthly, typically on the 10th of each month. If the 10th falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, payments are issued on the last working day before the 10th. For the 2025–2026 benefit year, payment dates are as follows:

  • October 10, 2025
  • November 10, 2025
  • December 10, 2025
  • January 9, 2026
  • February 10, 2026
  • March 10, 2026
  • April 10, 2026
  • May 9, 2026
  • June 10, 2026

If your 2024 return was assessed after June 19, 2025, your first OTB payment may be delayed by 4 to 8 weeks.

How Will I Receive My Payment?

Payments are issued by:

  • Direct Deposit: If you receive other CRA benefits via direct deposit, your OTB payments will be deposited directly into your bank account.
  • Cheque: If you don’t have direct deposit, payments will be mailed to your address.

To ensure timely and secure payments, consider enrolling in direct deposit through your CRA My Account.

How Can I Apply?

To apply for the OTB:

  1. File Your 2024 Income Tax and Benefit Return: Even if you don’t have income to report, filing is necessary to qualify for the OTB.
  2. Complete Form ON-BEN: This form is included with your tax return and determines your eligibility for the OEPTC and NOEC components.
  3. Submit by the Deadline: Ensure your tax return is filed by the deadline to avoid delays in receiving your benefit.

If you missed the deadline, you can still apply by filing a late return. However, late applications may result in delayed payments.

Can I Choose to Receive a Lump Sum Payment?

If your total OTB entitlement for the year exceeds $360, you have the option to receive your benefit as a lump sum payment in June 2026 instead of monthly payments. To choose this option, tick box 61060 on Form ON-BEN when filing your 2024 tax return. If you change your mind later, you can switch back to monthly payments by contacting the CRA.

The Ontario Trillium Benefit is a valuable financial resource for eligible residents, helping to offset living costs such as energy, property taxes, and sales taxes. By understanding the components, eligibility criteria, and payment options, you can make informed decisions about how to receive and utilize this benefit.
