About the OVCA

ovca orig logo 3 transparent

The Ottawa Valley Curling Association (OVCA) was established in 1959. It is an association of 45 curling clubs in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec whose mandate is to foster curling. The OVCA is an affiliate of the Canadian Curling Association. The OVCA works closely with the CCA and the Ontario Curling Association (OCA) to deliver products and services to curlers and clubs in the Ottawa Valley. The OVCA operates through a board of directors (including a treasurer and secretary and two specialists...youth director and development director. The board members are elected at the Annual General Meeting normally held in September. A Candidates Information Kit is available for anyone who wishes to become a Director of the OVCA.
Your board is made up of dedicated volunteers from many walks of life: accountants, project managers, retired educators and college professor, retired senior public servants, engineers and business owners. The directors have committed to being on the board for a five year period; other positions are for three year (renewable) terms. All directors have been presidents of curling clubs and many have sat on club board of directors and all are active curlers in OVCA clubs. The Upper Valley is represented by a non-voting member of the OVCA, Margaret Lomore, of the Pembroke Curling Club. Our goal is to have additional non-voting members who represent their geographic area (Lower Valley, Seaway, West Quebec).
With legacy funds from the Briers in 1979 and 1993, the OVCA established a Development Fund whose primary function is to give low interest loans (currently limited to $30,000 per club) to member clubs, and support various programs to enhance the sport of curling.
Currently, (2013-14) the cost of joining the OVCA is $100 plus HST/sheet. The fee is used for operating costs and financial support to club programs and curlers.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Clubs may apply for loans up to $30,000 at a rate of Royal Bank prime minus 1%. Doug Sears (Chairman, Board of Administrators) is the manager of this fund. Approximately $1.2 million has been loaned under this program. Currently, nine of the 45 member clubs have loans in place - and since the initiation of the fund, all but six of the OVCA member clubs have utilized these loans. For more information on the Fund, for the OVCA financial statements which outline the status of the Fund (and other documents presented at the 2012 AGM  go here. For the relevant By-Laws, go here  or contact the Secretary of the OVCA (secretary@ovca.com) for a copy.
Financial support for non-competitive youth programs at OVCA clubs. The OVCA has embarked on a program to provide financial support (up to $500 per year) to help clubs grown their non-competitive youth programs.
Financial support for clubs hosting provincial finals which lead to national competition and national events is currently under development by the board for presentation to the OVCA AGM in September 2013.

This bonspiel provides an opportunity for curlers from across the Ottawa Valley in three events: senior (32 teams); open (48 teams) and Colts - under 5 years (8 teams). The bonspiel is normally the third week of January and held over four days at ten clubs across the Ottawa Valley.

In addition, the OVCA provides grants to OVCA junior teams who advance to the: Canadian University Championships, Canadian Junior Championships and World Junior Championships. Participants must be members of OVCA clubs, see the policy for complete details (attached).

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR Non-Competitive Youth Curlers
The Fund was created to help clubs support their non-competitive your curlers. (see the policy attached).

SCHOOL CURLING INSTRUCTION
The OVCA is proud to work with Capital One Rocks & Rings to promote curling in schools. The program visits participating schools for a full school day and takes over the schools's gym as classes take turns visiting for 40 minute sessions of fun and instruction. Various drills, relays and team -building activities are used to introduce students to the sport of curling. For more information, go to Rocks & Rings.

JUNIOR PROGRAM
In partnership with the OCA the OVCA supports volunteers obtain their coaching certification. The courses are arranged through the OCA to help clubs run their junior programs. The OVCA Junior Symposium is held annually in September – this is an opportunity for junior coaches and volunteers involved in junior curling to come together and exchange ideas and plan events.

Annual General Meeting and Presidents’ Dinner
The OVCA Annual General Meeting and Presidents' Dinner is held during mid September each year. The various reports and financial statements are uploaded to the website as they become available.  Club presidents (or their alternate) are encouraged to come to the meeting and find out the news...where we have been and where we are going.  The information package for the 2011 meeting for Club Presidents is here. The 2012 information is available here.

What can curlers do?
Volunteer, it is as simple as that! You may have a few hours a month or a few hours a week, but the events and Ottawa Valley Curling Association needs your support. Tell us what you need as a curler to be successful...tell us what your club needs or wants to be successful.

Here are few ideas:
  • Become your club’s Ottawa Valley Curling Association Club Representative and be one of the first to know what is going on in the OVCA. Information flows from the board of directors to the club representatives and we want the information to flow back to the board. Talk to us!
  • Join a committee – each of the four events needs volunteer support to continue. A wide range of volunteer positions make up each committee.
  • Join the Ottawa Valley Board of Directors and help drive and direct the future of curling in the area. A Candidates Information Kit is available for anyone who wishes to become a Director of the OVCA. Typically directors spend five years on the board in a progression of roles leading to president of the Ottawa Valley Curling Association. Candidates Information Kit is available for anyone who wishes to become a Director of the OVCA.

OVCA Newsletter - October 2012

The curling season is well underway at most clubs. A special thank you the volunteers who put in countless hours supporting the curling events in the Ottawa Valley including two events coming soon: the Royal LePage OVCA Women’s Fall Curling Classic and the JSI-OVCA Junior SuperSpiel.

2012 saw a number of changes to The OVCA ALEXANDER KEITH'S CITY OF OTTAWA MEN'S BONSPIEL that were well received by curlers and this year's Committee will continue to build on that success. Work is well underway with only minor changes planned, primarily in the area of the Friday evening social event. Alexander Keith's have renewed their title sponsorship and most sponsors have agreed to return for this year's event. Clubs have again generously donated the ice required to host the 588 games. There are still a couple of spots on the Committee that need volunteers. If you know of anyone in your club who would be willing to help out, please advise Peter Smith, OVCA Events Co-ordinator (613).435.1836 - no previous experience necessary.

DID YOU KNOW? The OVCA recently approved funding ($500 per club) to develop, support and promote non-competitive youth curling. If your club would like to take advantage of the funding, please contact Jim Inch Information is also available on the OVCA website.
Be sure to check out the OVCA website ottawavalleycurling.ca for up-to-date information on curling in the Ottawa Valley. You may subscribe to updates to the website by following the links on the page. If you would like to post curling related information on the website please contact Art Olson at secretary@ovca.com.

Introducing THE OVCA COLTS LEAGUE! Under the leadership of Denis Carter (Cornwall) and with support from Jeremy McDonald (North Grenville) Stephanie McClennan (RCN) and John Dilabio (Cornwall and OVCA) a new league has been created in the Ottawa Valley for Colts/Novice Curlers (less than five years experience). This is a great opportunity to provide curlers with competition with their peers and grow curling in the clubs. Contact Denis Carter (613) 551-3431.

THE ROYAL LEPAGE OVCA WOMEN’S FALL CURLING CLASSIC will be held at the North Grenville Curling Club in Kemptville from November 1-4. Twenty-four teams will compete for $15,000, including 2008 Champion Rachel Homan, Marie-France Larouche, Allison Ross, Mary-Anne Arsenault, Stacie Devereaux, Darcy Robertson from Manitoba, Patti Lank and Victoria Moiseeva of Russia. Ottawa based teams are: Lauren Mann, Laura Payne, Cheryl McBain, Jaimee Gardner, Katie Morrissey, Rhonda Varnes, and Marla Weinberger. The bonspiel begins on Thursday afternoon with four draws starting at 1:00 pm. A complete list of teams and all the draw times are available at the Fall Classic website.

THE JSI – OVCA JUNIOR SUPERSPIEL to be held from November 2-4 has European and USA teams combined with provincial champions from Manitoba to Newfoundland. Now in its 19th consecutive year, the Junior SuperSpiel has seen many Canadian and World Junior Curling Champions come through Ottawa in past years. The SuperSpiel has been instrumental in the development of future Junior and Men’s and Women’s National and World Curling Champions. The SuperSpiel is being played at the Carleton Heights, Granite, Navy, Ottawa, City View and Manotick curling clubs with the finals at Carleton Heights on Sunday November 4th at 4pm. A Pro-Am with young local bantam curlers joining some of the “Pro’s” from the event kicks off the SuperSpiel at the Navy Curling Club on Nov 1, starting at 3:30pm. Admission is free and all are welcomed to join in our elite event and witness some of the best junior curling in the world. A complete list of teams and all the draw times are available at superspiel.ca.

The Renfrew Curling Rink is hosting the TIM HORTONS MASTERS MEN’S AND WOMEN’S  PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS from January 9 – 12, 2013. When Renfrew hosted the competition in 2010 the whole community got involved and had a rockin’ good time! This championship is for curlers aged 60 years or older. Eight Men’s and 8 Women’s teams from all over the Province of Ontario will compete in a round robin format at the Renfrew Curling Rink. The winners will go on to play in Nationals in Northern Ontario. This year’s theme is “Home Coming” as the club, in a way, welcomes back competitors. The club is hoping to meet or exceed 2010’s success. There are many ways for curlers and non-curlers to participate. The club will need sponsors, volunteers and creative ideas to make this the best possible week for players, volunteers and spectators alike. Anyone or any club interested in getting involved please contact Barb Westgarth at 613-432-4267 or t. For more information and continuous updates please check out the Renfrew Curling Club web site, the Masters site or on Facebook.

MEETING OF CLUB MANAGERS AND REPRESENTATIVES AND THE OVCA: In the spring the OVCA determined we must work to improve communications and relationships with clubs. A meeting was held with managers from several city clubs at the Ottawa Curling Club. We want to continue this effort and include all OVCA clubs. Our intent is to open up dialogue and work more closely with clubs to identify areas where the OVCA can provide more meaningful and relevant support to clubs and to curlers at all levels. Details of the location, time and date will be sent by a separate email. One agenda item will be the introduction of Devin Hastie of Labatt Breweries. Labatt Breweries and the Alexander Keith’s brand have been sponsor’s of curling for decades. As a proud supporter of the OVCA’s City of Ottawa Bonspiel, Labatt Breweries would like to elevate their level of sponsorship of the OVCA and the local clubs. Devin has a number of ideas to present to the clubs at the meeting. If you have suggestions for agenda items please contact Elaine Brimicombe.

To ensure our communications are reaching the right people at your club please ensure Art Olson, the OVCA secretary has the most up-to-date information.

On behalf of the OVCA board of directors have a great curling season!
Elaine Brimicombe, President, OVCA

The Ontario Curling Association has entered into a relationship with Altus Realty Tax Professionals regarding this year's tax assessments. The OCA article notes: Most clubs will have received their 2013 MPAC Tax Assessments by now so we would invite you as a valued OCA member club to take advantage of a great opportunity that the OCA has arranged to have your assessment reviewed by Altus Realty Tax Professionals at no cost or obligation. If interested simply complete the forms available (on the OCA site) and send in to the OCA who will then sign off and send along to Altus so the review process can begin. Interested teams should contact Denis Carter (613) 551-3431 or check out the Colts website.

Review of OVCA Mission and Mandate - At the Ottawa Valley Curling Association's Annual General Meeting there was a round table discussion as to how to recruit new curlers for our clubs. The OVCA board of directors continued this discussion with the CCA. Through these informative discussions the OVCA realized it was time to revisit our mandate and mission to ensure we are meeting the needs of two vital stakeholders – the clubs and curlers. The review process including the collection of information will be led by Duncan Jamieson. More information is available here. Should you have any questions, please contact Duncan Jamieson ((613)552-8334). Full details were sent to the clubs earlier this month by email.

The Board of Directors and everyone at the Ottawa Valley Curling Association wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
{popfeed}Comments?{/popfeed}

Since 1956, the OVCA through volunteer based committees has organized highly successful and fully subscribed bonspiels for curlers across the Ottawa Valley. The OVCA board is very appreciative of the excellent work by the committee members. We also want to thank club boards, managers, bartenders, volunteers and the ice technicians at the 15 plus clubs for their contribution to the success of the bonspiels.

We realize that curlers have many responsibilities and find it difficult to squeeze in time to volunteer. As a result, over the past few years, it has become increasingly difficult to staff the organizing committees. In particular, finding volunteers for the OVCA Mixed Bonspiel and the City of Ottawa Men’s Bonspiel has proven to be a challenge -- we need chairpersons and committee members for both bonspiels by June 15, 2013 in order to start planning for events in the next curling season. The OVCA Mixed and Men’s Bonspiel Committee Responsibilities document is available on our website under the About Us/ Committee Chairs (Committee Responsibilities) on the OVCA website (OVCA or by contacting Elaine. In addition, each committee has a template and detailed task list in place ... all we need are volunteers. A list of vacant positions is below. If we don’t have enough volunteers these two bonspiels are at risk of not happening in 2014.

Please contact Elaine to volunteer or for more information. Your ideas and suggestions are welcome!

On behalf of the Ottawa Valley Curling Association, Elaine Brimicombe

A huge thank you to the many volunteers at curling clubs across the Ottawa Valley! Volunteers are the backbone of every club in the Ottawa Valley. Without volunteers our Little Rockers and Learn to Curl members might never get a chance to throw their very first rock, our curlers and guests wouldn’t receive great food, renovation costs would soar and club events would dwindle. From the Ottawa Valley Curling Association Board of Directors to the many, many volunteers....a huge round of applause.

Ken Thain Award
One way to recognize the contribution your volunteers make is through the Ken Thain Award. Ken was a very fine curler in his own right, and curled competitively out of the Granite Curling Club. In 1977, he took on the role of Secretary Manager of the OVCA. He was very well respected and considered quite firm but fair. Quite organized, he conducted the Association’s business efficiently and effectively. Ken was someone you could always turn to for an answer.
It has been ten years since the last Ken Thain award was presented. The OVCA board of directors would resurrect the award and present it at the OVCA Annual General Meeting, to be held at the RA Centre on September 16, 2013. As the award is long overdue, the board of directors will consider recognizing more than one individual. Going forward the award will be presented annually at the Annual General Meeting.
To nominate a person who has contributed to curling in an organizing or administrative way club presidents (or their representatives) are requested to send a letter (in confidence) via email to the OVCA Secretary. Should email not be an option, please send your nomination to Peter Smith, OVCA Event Coordinator, 27 Vermeer Way, Kanata, ON K2K 2L9.
The letter should highlight the accomplishments of the nominee and benefits to the club or the curling community; a brief biography of the nominee and include a statement of support from the nominating club. If the award is to be presented retroactively please indicate the year(s). The nomination letter should be no longer than one page. All nominations must be received by the OVCA Secretary no later than July 31, 2013.

Support for Non-Competitive Youth Curling
The OVCA Board approved funding to develop, support and promote non-competitive youth curling. The program overview and application form is available on the OVCA website here.  Submissions for funding should be sent to OVCA Director Jim Inch prior to May 1, 2013 for inclusion in the OVCA’s 2013-2014 budget.
Our thanks to the clubs and members for supporting the Ottawa Valley Curling Association events throughout the year.

Elaine Brimicombe
President, Ottawa Valley Curling Association

The call for volunteers email was sent to all club presidents, managers and OVCA representatives and this week will be sent to over 600 participants in these two events. These are very popular bonspiels and never a shortage of curlers to play in either bonspiel. We need chairpersons and committee members for both bonspiels by June 15, 2013 in order to start planning for events in the next curling season. If we don’t have enough volunteers these two bonspiels are at risk of not happening in 2014. Please contact Elaine to volunteer or for more information.

On behalf of the OVCA board of directors, have a great summer and see you at the AGM, September 16, 2013 at the RA Centre, details to be sent in August.
